Zymography is known as an electrophoretic technique,commonly based on sodium dodecyl sulfate -- polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), which contains a substrate copolymerized within the polyacrylamide gel matrix (e.g gelatin), for the detection of an enzymatic activity.
The enzyme converts the substrate into a product which is detected by different staining methods. One of the most popular technique technique is by separating the protein mixture by Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in which a substrate is incorporated within the polyacrylamide gels.
MMPs are a family of at least 23 endopeptidases that act as effectors of extracellular matrix remodelling in physiological and pathological conditions.
