Most people with lower back pain never think to look at how they walk. But the way you move from step to step — the rotation of your spine, the coordination of your arms and legs, the balance and uprightness you carry through every stride — has a direct effect on the health of your lower back and its supporting muscles.
In this video, Nick Chapman shares a very specific approach to walking taught within the Alexander Technique — a method developed and refined by Dyllis Carrington at the world-renowned Carrington School. It's one of the most distinctive and lesser-known aspects of Alexander Technique training, and it's something you won't find explained like this anywhere else on YouTube.
What makes this approach different is the focus on spinal rotation — the natural, alternating movement of the spine that most modern walkers have lost entirely. Restoring this rotation doesn't just improve how you walk. It progressively targets lower back pain, develops better balance and coordination, and creates a more upright, efficient way of moving through the world.
If you've tried exercises, stretches, or core work for lower back pain and found the results inconsistent, this may be the missing piece.
