According to a government audit, the next-generation flight suit, the Orion Crew Survival System (OCSS), will not be delivered until March 2021, just five months before NASA's internal target launch date.
NASA has worked on three separate spacesuit projects in the previous eight years: the Constellation Space Suit System (CSSS), the Advanced Space Suit Project, and the Orion Crew Survival System (OCSS). None of them, however, has developed a spacesuit capable of flight. According to the audit, the lack of a clear strategy for future missions and specific destinations has slowed spacesuit development because different missions necessitate different designs.
Previously, NASA linked spacesuit development to specific programs, but spacesuits have been developed independently of missions more recently. The audit also raised concerns about NASA's decision to continue paying the CSSS after the mission's termination and recommended that the contract is terminated. It stated that astronauts had completed 204 spacewalks while wearing the EMUs, with 27 serious issues included glove breakage, high body temperatures, and water intrusions into the helmet.
