🔶 Technique Tuesday: Hiatal Hernia, Acid Reflux, and GERD 🔶

Any time an internal body part pushes into an area where it doesn’t belong, it’s called a hernia. Food travels down the esophagus when we eat, passing through a small opening (hiatus) in the diaphragm before entering the stomach. Please visit our website for more information: https://erikdalton.com/

A hiatal hernia occurs when the top of the stomach either rolls or slides up into this opening and becomes stuck there.

When this happens, clients begin to experience symptoms like
heartburn
esophageal spasms
inflammation
ulcers

The hiatal hernia has been called the “great mimic” because it mimics many disorders.
The causes of a hiatal hernia are speculative and unique to each individual. However, several presumed possibilities exist, including an array of mechanical causes.

There are many assessment methods for hiatal hernia, but a maneuver I have used on my clients as part of MAT is fairly simple and reliable.
