Hello, Eccentrics. Welcome to another session of the Club!
Mariana Enriquez's novel, "Our Part of the Night," is an ambitious horror epic that managed to pull me out of my deep sleep. The story takes place in Argentina, where the founding families of the Cult of the Shadow, also known as the Order, an international secret society of wealthy occultists, seek to preserve consciousness after death. And this quest for immortality leads them to do the unthinkable.
These families are: The Bradfords, the Reyeses, and the Mathers. Rosario Reyes Bradford, one of the heirs of the Order, is Juan's wife, and with him she has a son, Gaspar. But we are introduced to this story when Rosario is no longer among them.
Juan and Gaspar possess divine gifts that the Order covets: they are mediums with the ability to invoke "the Darkness," described in various ways as a mouth that feeds on human life and a shape-shifting presence that envelops us like a shadow, tearing off limbs and swallowing people. Darkness is a contradictory force, bringing both life and death, something simultaneously obscure and "brilliant."
