Ellen Langer’s fascinating CounterClockwise study revealed how much of an impact our surroundings have on our mental and physical wellbeing.
In 1979, Langer took a group of elderly men to a retreat center that resembled the world 20 years earlier. The men were surrounded by magazines, music, movies and news from the era (1959) to make it feel as if they had gone back in time. Amazingly, the men started showing improvements in their physical health, including better posture, greater flexibility, and enhanced mental sharpness and memory.
By immersing themselves in an environment that made them feel younger, the men actually became younger. Incredible.
