The Forgotten Battle at the Bulahi

Here stands the Mound of Glory, under which lie the remains of 1,200 soldiers and officers of the 6th Guards Cavalry Corps of the Red Army who fell in battle February 24, 1943 during the Poltava offensive operation. The names of more than half of them are UNKNOWN, and the circumstances of the death are not completely understood.
The tragedy that took place in the vicinity of a simple Ukrainian farm was a consequence of the chain of miscalculations of the Soviet command, aggravated by the lack of information about the forces and plans of the enemy, as well as the shortage of tanks, anti-tank weapons and ammunition from advancing cavalrymen. Their opponent was the fresh units of the SS Grenadier Division's "Dead Head", which had just disembarked in Krasnograd and were ready to carry out any assigned task. Much that day from the SS was not required: to destroy in the course of the counterattack as much as possible the manpower of the advancing 69th Army of the Voronezh Front.
