The Great War #11 | How Did Austria-Hungary Start World War 1?
The July Crisis is coming to an end. After weeks of diplomatic battles, the armies are taking the field. With Serbia’s refusal to fully accept the ultimatum, Austria-Hungary gains the pretext for war it had been seeking. Yet the reply to the ultimatum sparks heated debates, especially in Berlin. Kaiser Wilhelm believes the cause for war has disappeared, but his statesmen warn him that they have already reached the point of no return. The possibility of escalation causes deep anxiety both in Berlin and in St. Petersburg.
To ease tensions and prevent the crisis from spreading, Tsar Nicholas and Kaiser Wilhelm begin what history remembers as the “Willy–Nicky Correspondence.” From midnight on July 29 until August 1, the two sides exchange warnings, urging each other not to mobilize. But the point of no return has already been crossed. The first shots of the First World War are fired from the SMS Bodrog against Belgrade. The world is now at war.
