The Doppler Effect—the sound of coming and going: When a source of sound is moving toward you, successive wavefronts arrive more frequently. You perceive this increase in frequency as a higher tone. Conversely, if the source of sound is moving away from you, the time between wavefronts reaching you is a little longer and this decrease in frequency is perceived as a lower tone.
