Hammerklavier and his immense adagio
The Hammerklavier Adagio, from his Piano Sonata No. 29, is the first adagio of colossal dimensions that Beethoven composed. Paul Bekker defined this adagio as "the apotheosis of pain, of that profound pain for which there is no remedy, and which finds expression not in passionate outpourings, but in the immeasurable stillness of absolute sorrow." Indeed, the adagio is a veritable temple found in the darkness of night.
