Building a High Odds Rut Stand w/ Deer Habitat Improvements
That most beautiful time of year we've all been waiting for as hunters is mere days away. I always think of October 23rd as the kickoff to the pre-rut. We have a cold front rolling through that day so I anticipate the movement should start with a bang. It won't be too long before we start to push into some of those best rut stands that we've laid out for this very time of year.
If you don't feel like you have a great rut stand set-up, but you own your own property, you can literally build these locations.
In this video, I show how I was able to build a high odds rut stand location on our family farm. This spot was about 6 years in the making, but it's finally to that point where it should be firing on all cylinders this fall.
It took a ton of work. But with some careful planning and sweat equity, I was able to make this spot a powerful rut stand location. And as the years progress, we've been able to create more than one location like this on the farm and will continue to add more locations like this in future.

For foliar treatment of buckthorn I treat them with a 5% solution of Triclopyr 4. For cut stump I treat the stump with a 25% solution of Triclopyr 4/ 75% diesel or crop oil. I like to mix in applicator dye with both solutions to see where I'm spraying easier. You end up using less chemical if you mix in dye.
