Anytime I'm looking at timbered acres, logging is always one of the first habitat management practices I consider (unless invasives are present). Logging not only improves your deer habitat on a large scale, it also puts money in your pocket that you can roll into other habitat improvements.
When you do plan on logging, go into it knowing that you'll have to wait for a good logger. A forester once told me, "Loggers have over a million dollars in equipment, if it's not rolling, they're not making money. If a logger can tell you he can be there tomorrow, that's a major red flag."
We had to wait 3 years for our property to get logged. But waiting on a reputable logger is worth the wait.
And take the logger when you can get them. We had ours logged in August, right before bow season. But I didn't care, I wanted it done. And I ended up having one of my best hunting seasons to date that fall.
In this video, I stopped by a property that was getting logged in late August. There were roughly only 10 acres of marketable timber on this piece, so again, we took the logger when we could get him.
Yes, this added a lot of disturbance before the season, but the long term benefits this will bring are worth it. These 10 acres will be a powerful attraction within 1-2 years. I'm excited for this landowner!
