I remember watching Samurai X every Thursday when I was little. My brother loved it; it was his favorite cartoon series. Although I wasn’t a big fan, the intro always gave me goosebumps. A few months ago, I listened to it on YouTube, and nostalgia hit me hard. Back then, we had only one channel on a black-and-white TV. Some parts of the screen were cropped due to the faulty display, and we had to manually adjust the sound over and over because the volume would decrease automatically. But despite everything, we were happy just to have the chance to watch those cartoons. We’d wait all week for a single episode, and when the time finally came, we’d be overwhelmed with excitement and joy.
Now, we have almost uninterrupted internet (except for the electricity issues in our country), and everything is literally at our fingertips, yet we can’t enjoy it like we used to. The more choices we have, the more depressed we seem to get. Perhaps it’s the abundance. Like Rapunzel, who thought she’d be happy once she left the tower—but later on, she discovered there were responsibilities, dangers, and challenges too in the outside world. But gradually, she accepted reality and found happiness within her situation.
As a wise person once said, ‘We are never happy because we always search for it in the future.’ How true that is! We think, ‘When I buy that, I’ll be happy,’ but what about what we already have? Or, ‘When I visit that place, I’ll be happy,’ but what about the beautiful sunrise, mist, wildflowers, colorful skies, and full moon already surrounding us with their selfless beauty? Maybe we need to stop putting happiness off for the future and start enjoying the present moment. Because every moment is new, every moment is special, and every moment is once in a lifetime.
We have to accept that bad things will always be part of life. There will always be challenges: bad people, bad luck, tough circumstances, poor weather, illness—life’s difficulties. But that doesn’t mean we should stop being happy or enjoying what life offers us right now.
