The Rediscovered Madonna
In the winter of 2021, during work to move a 19th-century tombstone, restorers drilled two inspection holes in the north-west wall of the crypt of Parma Cathedral to check for the presence of burials within the counter wall.
Through these breaches in the brick wall, they discovered the presence of a hidden mural painting: the rediscovered Madonna.
Restoration work began in January 2023 and will be completed in early 2024.
