Ok, so today is pink shirt day. The idea is to get everyone to wear a pink shirt in order to support people that are bullied. What a great idea, right? Pink shirt day does have it’s detractors however. There are some that say this is great for one day a year, what about the other 364 days of the year? Others that say, this is ridiculous, you are not going to stop bullying simply by having everyone wear a pink shirt. Like the bullies are going to go, oh everyone says this is bad, maybe I should stop picking on people. The important thing here is to understand how pink shirt day started and what it is really about.
The first pink shirt day took place in the small village of Cambridge Nova Scotia at Central Kings Rural High School on Wednesday November 27th 2007, and get this, it was not organized by the teachers and staff at the school. It was actually organized by two students of the school, who were actually told they could be expelled if the event caused any unrest.
Here is how it came about. A brand-new grade 9 student came to the first day of school wearing a pink polo shirt. A group of students saw him wearing pink and immediately started teasing him, calling him gay and pushing him around. Two senior students at the school Travis Price and David Sheppard, heard about the event and immediately thought they needed to do something for this student, as they had been bullied in the past and wanted to let the victim know that he did not have to face this on his own. That night Price and Sheppard went out and bought 75 pink women’s tank tops as well as pink pro-wrap for wristbands and headbands. They then took to social media which at the time consisted of Facebook and MSN messenger and tried to reach as many people as they could, telling them they wanted everyone to wear pink the next day to support the student that had been picked on. Now, Price and Sheppard were not the most popular kids in school, so it’s not like everyone felt obliged to do this because “the cool kids” wanted them to. Price and Sheppard also contacted school administration to let them know what they had planned. School administration informed them that if there were any fights or any incidents, they could face expulsion. Without hesitation they decided, they were going to do this anyways. According to Travis Price “It was just something to me that I thought, this will be the best fight I’m ever gonna fight, if it’s gonna happen.” Price saw himself in the victims’ shoes and decided to take a stand.
What happened the next day? Out of a school of one thousand kids, somewhere between 700-850 kids showed up wearing pink. The general consensus was that almost everybody had experienced being bullied at one point or another, so wanted to show support for this new student to let him know he is not alone. The victim? He did not wear a pink shirt that day, because he did not want to be picked on two days in a row for wearing a pink shirt. He knew what Price and Sheppard had planned but didn’t know what the response was going to be. Luckily for him Price and Sheppard saved a pink shirt just for him and according to Price, when the victim walked through the doors you could see the weight that was lifted off his shoulders knowing he was not alone.
