Flames soaring towards the sky instantly reduce all the artworks to ashes. A suspicious person is captured on surveillance cameras📷, but there are no clues to identify the culprit. Only the subtle movements of a black silhouette👤, as dark as the shadows, remain. The investigator tracks down stakeholders involved in the case to narrow down the suspects... Could this be the work of digital museum officials who burned the analog artworks🖼 to keep only the digital ones as originals for profit? The one attempting to destroy the physical artwork—who is the real culprit? We chase the dark shadow cast over the case.
$590,000, approximately 700 million KRW. This is the proceeds from an NFT auction last February for "Nyan Cat," a cat video that was popular on the internet 10 years ago. A simple pixel art video featuring a cat flying through space with a rainbow tail and singing "meow meow" sounds was recognized as being worth nearly 700 million KRW. How can a digital artwork, which lacks even a physical form, be recognized for such a high value? Even David Hockney, considered a master of contemporary art, fiercely criticizes NFTs, calling them "international fraud." On the other hand, Damien Hirst, known as the enfant terrible of the contemporary art world, created NFT versions of his physical works and asked buyers to choose ownership of only one; if they chose the NFT version, he would burn the physical piece. He states that since his work exists as an NFT, he is unconcerned about the original burning. How should we view NFTs? Now, perhaps, is the very time to reflect on the true value of art, transcending the difference between digital and physical forms. Where does the value of art lie, in your opinion? 👩🎨🎨
