Born in 1769 in St. Neots, England, Bellingham faced challenges early on due to his father's mental illness. As he grew older, he sought wealth and adventure, but his dreams were repeatedly crushed by misfortune.
After surviving a shipwreck, Bellingham returned to England and started a family while working as a merchant broker. However, his ambitions led him to Russia, where he was falsely accused and imprisoned for five years. Despite his pleas for help, the British government, including then-Chancellor of the Exchequer Spencer Perceval, ignored his requests.
