The history of sleep is one of humanity's most futile struggles. From the dawn of humanity we slept when it was dark and woke when it was light, but that didn't satisfy our insatiable desire to squeeze more hours into the day.

The ancient Egyptians invented candles so they could stay up later. The 19th century brought us lightbulbs and sliced another hour off our nightly slumber. Now we have 24-hour digital temptation and some get by on a risible 6 hours a night.

The history of sleep is the history of humanity itself. From our prehistoric ancestors to the ancient Egyptians, through the industrial revolution and into the digital age, sleep has shaped who we are. The sooner we make peace with it, the better. So go to bed. Your tired, addled mind will thank you for it in the morning. And if you're still reading this at 3am, for the love of all that's holy, put down your screen and close your eyes. The end.
