For Buddhists, Bodhgaya, in north-eastern India, is the most important of four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha and where, it is said, in 534BC he obtained Enlightenment. Today the Mahabodhi Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which contains the Bodhi tree, a direct descendant from the original.
Outside the gates the serene temperament found within the Temple gives way to Bodhgaya's market place where everyday challenges are faced by Bodhgaya's citizens working in shops, restaurants, selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, candles and souvenirs and begging.
The Bodhgaya community is also home to a number of country hosted temples, many which are open to the public.
