Transcript:

Dr. Karen Curry Parker:

How does a sensitive person become empathetic or empathic and not get overwhelmed, struggle with boundaries, all those things that happen to really sensitive people that can cause them to actually really kind of be burned out from caring?

Dr. Judith Orloff:

That's the big challenge, isn't it? You have to learn how to set boundaries with people. And you have to realize that it's not your job to take on everyone else's pain.

It's not your job to fix someone. If you have appendicitis, if you have major depression, if you have a loss in your family, if my job is to fix you, you're not going to have any energy left because there's so many people who are going through so many things and it's not your responsibility.

However, you can be a healer, and you could hold space for people, and not take on their stuff by keeping an extra little foot of distance from them, and not become enmeshed. To take a breath and just say, this person is a separate being from me.
