This tune is the first of only 4 non-original songs we ever recorded, it was written by Bill Danoff and Jon Carroll. (Bill had mega success with the Jon Denver song ‘Country Roads’)
Doug’s vocal on the song was decidedly tongue-in-cheek, and Doug kept it there with his concept for this video. For a shameless pop tune, the boss thought we should spoof all our favourite pop culture TV classics. We therefore paid homage to: Beverly Hillbillies, Fantasy Island, The Honeymooners, Lone Ranger, Star Trek, You Bet Your Life, The Price is Right, Zorro and ???
This brought out a fundamental difference between Doug & me. I started life in the UK and grew up mostly without TV, I'd seen Beverly Hillbillies and Lone Ranger but none of the others. Doug was totally immersed in TV culture and was always amazed and frustrated at my total ignorance of the genre. As far as he was concerned I came from another planet. The guys had to coach me on my Spock performance, but my Jethro came naturally. We used my old yellow crew cab (our first band vehicle) as the Hillbilly’s truck, and fun story: I kept my Spock costume on as I drove the truck home at 3am. I was stopped by the cops for a tail-light violation and I gave the officer my best Spock voice while producing my license. He was not remotely amused and just said ‘so…early Hallowe’en or somethin' as he wrote up a ticket.
One of the unexpected results of shooting these music videos and tv specials was that we gained huge respect for real actors. Even born hams like John, Doug & I struggled to deliver a single line or reaction shot without looking like complete idiots. We even coined an acronym for it: BMA aka bad musician acting. That said, we did make some amends with this epic performance. The Slug Oscar goes to Steve Bosley for his excellent renditions of Tattoo, Groucho Marx and Granny. Honourable mention to John for his Elly May/Ed Norton turns, and Doug for his Captain Kirk."
