Bonus Insights around the Pareto Chart in Excel:
In order to make the recommended areas of focus as visual as possible, the Pareto Chart contains both bars (representing the frequency) and a line (representing the cumulative frequency) of the variables under review.
There are software packages on the market to support, but we have proven here, that a simple Pareto Chart in Excel can be very quick, easy and cost effective to pull together.
You'll notice that most examples of Pareto Charts are highlighting defects (including our templates). But please keep in mind that Pareto Charts can be used for anything e.g. for analysing and focusing on your best clients. The key point is, that Pareto Charts are NOT ONLY FOR DEFECT FOCUS.
The other key takeaway is to CONSTANTLY use the Pareto Principle and Pareto Charts to continually improve. Focusing on your most important 20% is not a one off event, it should be a continuous process.
