Grooming Hover Fly - Simosyrphus grandicornis
This is a macro video on a hoverfly.
This fly was retiring for the night. It found the perfect spot to settle. Before it went to sleep, it had to clean itself meticulously.
Hoverfly has a pair of flexible hind legs which can flip upwards for grooming its abdomen, top, underside and tip of its wings. It can turn its head 180 degree upwards too.
Cleaning is such an important part of life both for animals, insects and humans. Cleaning is an innate behaviour in animals. They clean to remove dirt , pathogens, parasites and parasitoids on their body surface. Flying insects clean to reduce flight resistance and others clean to improve sensory organ acuity.
Researchers are now studying insects grooming behaviour. They are learning how insects keep themselves clean and hope to apply this findings in making self-cleaning robots, drones and machines.
