The Megadata of Lake Mendota: Sampling a Frozen Lake
For most of the year, collecting microbial samples from Wisconsin’s Lake Mendota requires a boat ride. That changes once the lake freezes in winter --- Robin Rohwer explains. She did this work while completing a PhD at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

This video is part of a series on an approved JGI Community Science Program proposal from Trina McMahon's lab at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. These researchers have studied that lake for over 20 years to understand how the freshwater ecosystem works. The JGI supported the project with sequencing, software development, and supercomputing to assemble 500 metagenomes from Lake Mendota.
