Recently, I got the opportunity to work again on the Booknerds Intro after 7 years. When we first started with the Booknerds Intro 7 years ago, Booknerds was still in the foundation stages and so were my skills. So, we made a nice and short Intro which was essentially copied from a YouTube tutorial. When we had a chance to remake the Intro this year, we knew that we had to build on that concept, while also reflecting on the growth that Booknerds have had over these 7 years. Other than that, we needed to include Books! So, I started the process by taking images of the cover pages and spine of several books and stitched them digitally to create the jacket of the books which could also serve as the textures for the 3D model. After that, I imported all these textures into Blender and started modelling individual books. We made a total of 33 books. Next up, we had to arrange these books on a bookshelf and have them fly at the camera to reveal the logo. I hand animated all the books flying away from the bookshelf to form a 'wall' which would later transition into the logo. During this whole process, we felt that some personal touch was missing. We realized that we needed to have bookmarks to complete the sequence. So, I gathered a couple of photos of some authors that the Booknerds had previously interviewed and added those photos along with their names to our 'custom Booknerds bookmarks'. We then repeated the process of carefully hand animating the bookmarks flying towards the camera as well. Now, we had to figure out a way to transition the wall into the logo. The transition needed to be organic, seamless and completely blend in with the concept. We tried a bunch of variations of these transitions ranging from smoke, glitches and even transformer animations. We finally landed on the ink splatter effect. I added those transitions to the texture itself so that on adding those textures to the 3D models of the books, the cover would appear to decolorize and fade into the yellow colour of the logo. After this we added the ink splatter effect to the logo as well, to make a smooth and highly stylized Intro.
