Lisa Baskin Write is an IEP coach and a parent of an autistic daughter. She did a Live Instagram with me on @autismcareerpathways and we talked about:
😀You are the best advocate for your child. You know a lot about your little autistic human, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
😄 Ask WHY if a goal doesn’t sound right. If you can’t picture your #autisticchild successfully carry out the goal, then it’s either not needed, incomplete or not written to include the child’s perspectives! Ask for an example or a demonstration.
😀 Social and communication goals have to reflect #autisticstudent’s preferences and interests, as well as peer’s. Communication is a two way street!!
🤓Self regulation- adult guides are needed as regulation partner especially for little ones. Can adult guides recognize opportunities to support regulation needs and are sensory regulation tools accessible? Don’t forget autistic students already use stimming to regulate, are they allowed to stim?
😉 Write the document in a respectful language so the student to read it and understand. Remove ableist tone, words such as inappropriate behaviors, obsessive, deviant, non-compliant etc.
