How to prune tomatoes for beginners. There are two main tomato pruning methods for indeterminate tomatoes used for a maximum crop yield. What do I mean by indeterminate tomato? This is sometime in late October to mid-November. For warmer climates, the pruning method and number of flowering clusters will be different depending on the grower and variety. Tomato pruning should start when the first flowering cluster appears on the stem.
