How to prune tomatoes for beginners. There are two main tomato pruning methods for indeterminate tomatoes used for a maximum crop yield. What do I mean by indeterminate tomato? Indeterminate varieties are initially decumbent and grow as a type of grape vine that can reach up to 2 meters. Indeterminate tomatoes are perennial plants and can bear berries for more than a year. But in cold and temperate climates they’re annual. Determinate tomatoes are cultivars of formed bushes, are not taller than a meter and are always annual in any climate. Determinate tomatoes do not need pruning at all. This is a very simple method for pruning indeterminate tomatoes that grow in the open ground for USDA zones 4-5 where winter time breaks vegetation. This is sometime in late October to mid-November. For warmer climates, the pruning method and number of flowering clusters will be different depending on the grower and variety. Tomato pruning should start when the first flowering cluster appears on the stem. This is needed to remove all the bottom leaves and suckers from bottom of the vine until first leaf where first flowering cluster has appeared. #tomatoes #tomato #pruning #tomatoplants #tomatoplanting #plantingvegetables #plantingtomatoes #tomatoplants #gardening #gardeningtips #vegetablegarden #plantpropagation #plantcutting #vegetables #seedlings
