Defense and resistance in psychoanalytic practice. The concepts of defense against the unpleasantness of memory and resistance to its conscious transformation are explored. Freud's abandonment of hypnosis is discussed, and his underpinning of psychoanalytic technique, leading up to free association, is explored step by step. Towards the end, "metapsychology" is defined, and the levels of technique and theory are differentiated.
