Hypnosis and the origins of psychoanalysis. Rule X of R. Descartes' "Rules for the Direction of the Mind" is discussed and connected to the work of the analysand and the value of their own path. A brief biographical overview of S. Freud is presented, recounting his financial difficulties as a researcher, his cocaine addiction, and his subsequent encounter with the hypnosis techniques of Charcot and Breuer. Towards the end, the role of memory as a cause of symptoms in relation to trauma and the psychic defense against trauma is emphasized.
