House Republicans Release Comprehensive Immigration Legislation with Tighter Asylum Eligibility and Expanded Migrant Family Detention
House Republicans ReleaseNew Sweeping Immigration Bill with Tighter Asylum Eligibility
The House Republicans have introduced a comprehensive immigration legislation bill that aims to tighten asylum eligibility, expand migrant family detention, and crack down on the employment of undocumented workers.
However, the bill is expected to face obstacles in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, and may face internal debate within the House Republican caucus regarding border security.
The bill incorporates some of the deliberations that took place behind closed doors over the past few weeks and revive several Trump-era programs to limit asylum eligibility for migrants traveling to the U.S-Mexico border.
Additionally, the bill seeks to restrict eligibility for migrants who have traveled through another country en route to the U.S. and had not first attempted to seek protection in the other country.
The bill also takes aim at employers that hire undocumented immigrants by ramping up requirements for them to electronically verify that their employees have permission to work in the U.S.
