Pepo La Tumaini Jangwani; Empowering Girls in the Time of Covid-19.
We have thought about the particular vulnerabilities faced by the girls in our community, and how we can offer solutions to support and empower them throughout the COVID-19 (coronavirus) crisis. In the context of COVID-19, we are afraid that school closures will cause even more girls to drop out of formal education. The interruption in schooling is already increasing domestic responsibilities for girls. Moreover, we are seeing that being outside of the protective environment provided by schools is making girls more susceptible to early pregnancy and gender-based violence. In response to the urgent need to provide a “safe space’ for girls who are out of school. The new ‘Girl’s Club House’ would provide a sanctuary for learning and therapy, as well as provide essential distributional services for young mothers and girls in Isiolo.
