Today 60% of the African population are under 25. Their drive, ambition and potential provide countries like Kenya with an extraordinary asset. Young people have spent more years in school but few have been effectively equipped with the skills the economy needs. Matching the high energy, creativity and talents of our youth with keen financial knowledge and business skills, is one of the ways we are preparing our young people to drive the direction of development in the country.
The impact of Covid greatly affected the youth affecting their ability to find employment and become self-reliant. We have graduates who are qualified and skilled with no job opportunities and young people who are left out of the education system altogether due to circumstance. Together with the YPP we decided to expand their scope of work to include creative entrepreneurship and the acquisition of marketable skills.
We have identified the new Trade and Talent Centre as a platform for them to help influence the design of accessible courses and activities that focus on the cultivation of small business projects. Thanks to our partnership with Kuungantech we now have a graduated team of certified Trainers in Financial Management, who are set to take the lead in starting their training programme for unemployed youth in Isiolo, who want to start their own businesses.
Topics include budgeting, saving, financial policy and money beliefs. Youth leaders will now pilot their own initiatives and prepare their learning to train other groups of young people in Isiolo, who want to start up their own businesses.
