Up close Look, Difference Between Mud and Stone Crabs For Bait
I'm catching stone and mud crabs specifically to get a close look at the differences. This video has information about how to tell the difference between the two. The identification tips compiled here were all found in various articles online. Please do your own research about how to determine if a small bait crab is a mud species or stone.
Florida has very strict regulations on certain types of shellfish. Please do not make a mistake and get in serious trouble. If you have any doubt at all throw the little critter back. It's just not worth taking the risk of getting fined in the state of Florida for possession of stone crabs illegally.
From what I've read all stone crabs, big or small, have white bands on their legs, mud crabs don't.

Tips For Catching Shellfish For Bait:
1. A good pair of gloves is a must
2. Look for areas where there are rocks or oyster beds during low tide
3. Bring a small container that you can keep the crabs in and also be able to put water in
4. With extra caution maneuver your way through areas where the mud crabs are believed to be and start flipping over rocks or clumps of oysters
5. Grab the crabs gently and identify weather you've caught a mud crab or a stone crab
In Florida fiddler crabs are also a good bait to use for fishing. There are plenty of tutorials out there for how to catch fiddler crabs.
