The Ghostly Black Devil - Gengar FOR SMASH! (Challenger Concept #60)
When it comes to franchises getting new combatants in Smash Bros, the Pokemon series is the only one that has consistently had a newcomer in each installment of Smash. Despite this, however, a majority of Pokemon's newcomers have been based around the current generation, and in turn, meant to be an advertisement for their current products. This has lead to many iconic Pokemon missing out on a chance to become playable, and out of all the notable Pokemon in this group, Gengar stands out as the one that's the most egregious.
Gengar's popularity has never ceased to wane since his introduction in the original Pokemon Red and Green, and while he's very popular, the talk about Gengar in Smash is fairly muted thanks to the trends of Pokemon newcomers. Even if that's the case, Gengar's potential as a fighter is enormous, and while I feel his kit could be built in a variety of ways, I've done my best to put together a design that truly embodies all of Gengar's best attributes.
