Houston's landscape maintenance companies don't always educate their clients when they offer services like tree trimming and tree pruning. While tree trimming is light clean up of small interior branches and can be done at any time of year, the pruning of large limbs should only be done during the dormant season.

The dormant season in Houston is incredibly short during the coolest part of the year, but you may see tree pruning services offered year-round. Will pruning out of season severely damage your trees? Well, that all depends on how healthy your tree is, which pests it may be susceptible to, and potential fungus or diseases in the area that may prey upon your newly cut limb.

This episode has been made to help clarify the confusion surrounding pruning and demonstrate techniques, tools, and most importantly, how we choose which limbs and branches will be removed. The best part about tree pruning is what you can do with trimmed limbs after you prune! Mushroom logs are my favorite application, but I've also used this tree to expand my hugelkultur mound, stocked up on firewood, and used smaller twigs and leaves in the compost pile.
