This short video explains the "useful volume ratio" for solvent traps, which is simply the useful volume divided by the total volume. The design of an oil filter provides relatively little room to trap swabs, patches, detritus, etc. A plastic water bottle, on the other hand, provides a nearly 1:1 ratio of useful volume.
