Today I'm going to tell you about the main misunderstandings surrounding Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD.

One of the strategies in cognitive behavioral therapy is "imagining the worst."

When faced with a worry, the person asks themselves, "What's the worst that could happen?"

This way, they can realize that even by imagining the absolute worst, there's a solution. The idea is that this will help them lose the fear of what they fear happening, even if it's even more catastrophic.

If you're clear-headed, simply wanting to make a decision, for example, then it can work. You use this kind of "defensive pessimism" to put things into perspective and to remember that every problem has a solution. BUT, if you're confused, feeling that everything is threatening, feeling that you can't do anything because you don't trust your own resources… you can end up overwhelmed by this cognitive strategy.

It made me laugh because while I was writing about this, the autocorrect changed "cognitive" to "congestive."

And the thing is, if you don't truly understand that any content, any scene you imagine, are just movies that aren't actually happening, your brain will continue to activate its anxiety defense.
Part of you knows they're just mental scenes, I know, but you still feel fear because you lack a conscious understanding of the nature of thought. This is what we call the five levels of transformation. That's why, if you stay at the cognitive level, demanding that you change the content of your thoughts, you end up with a feeling of congestion, overcrowding, obstruction, gridlock, a bottleneck in your experience.

Has something similar ever happened to you? You try to see the positive side of a problem, or you try to analyze how it arose, how you can solve it, what would happen if this or that, and you end up with your head spinning, with increasing congestion? This happens because in certain states, it's simply not advisable to trust what your mind tells you…
