Recently, the speedrunner Pablo Diaz questioned whether it was optimal to feed the hungry luma during Space Junk 3 or during the secret star itself, so I put that to the test and these are the results.
Conclusion:
It is (marginally) faster to unlock the hungry luma during SJ3 because of the launch star spawning timer. However, this is reliant on a really good long jump (timing and angle) at the end of feeding the luma. For RTA, Pablo suggests it is worth it to feed the luma during SJS since you can use the launch star startup to get an insta-walk on the Yoshi planet (this is irrelevant in the TAS because we can Goomba-Cancel the landing lag instead).
The actual starbit collection was more of a LOTAD since there were some big mistakes, but as per usual this is me getting back into TASing. Here are some notes for anyone curious:
• The sound effect of jumping around the corner on the crystal planet is a glitch, I don't actually jump
• Pressing C to change the camera slowed me down (since it holds neutral)
• The path I look during the zoom in is strange but purposeful in order to actually spawn all the starbits on the rocketship
• It is faster to wait for these starbits to spawn than to make the detour to a crystal on the planet with the hungry luma
• The positioning to spawn the starbits and grab the pullstar right away is very precise. I have no doubt the RTA community might find a setup for it though
• The pullstar path is not the best, but it avoids coins
• I didn't do as good a job using backwards momentum out of the bubble as I did in the actual SJS TAS
• I walk to the left slightly before talking to the luma to fix the camera
