Batteries for the grid are the key to storing electricity generated from renewable sources. A special kind of battery—a redox flow battery—is ideal for grid storage because they can be easily scaled to store more energy. PNNL has developed next-generation redox flow batteries using different materials as we strive to discover lower cost, sustainable electrolytes. PNNL aims to exceed the Department of Energy’s Long-Duration Storage Shot goal for the next decade: grid batteries that deliver full power for more than 10 hours while costing 90 percent less.
