Here’s a 60ish second explanation of the types of funding mechanisms for research based graduate programs!📚🤓
Although all research based PhD program guarantee students funding (with includes a monthly stipend to live off-of), the type of funding can have a big impact on your graduate school experience. Fellowships all you the greatest flexibility with your time, while Research Assistantships (RAs) & Teaching Assistantships (TAs) can typically take-up to 20 hours/week of your time. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if you love teaching (TA) or the research you're doing for your RA, but it could negatively impact your progress with your dissertation research.
I have/will be on fellowships throughout my PhD and this was an active decision on my part to apply for/secure them. I love the freedom that comes with fellowships, it enables me to conduct the research I care most about and the ability to explore other side-projects/opportunities (both research and non-research related).
