Hands-on with the Sony Alpha 9 III and the FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS lens
We were fortunate enough to get an early look at the latest full-frame camera, the @Sony Alpha 9 III, and the new FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS lens.
This new Sony Alpha 9 III is yet another revolution in the world of photography! It's the first full-frame camera with a global shutter system, allowing you to shoot bursts of up to 120 frames per second without distortion or blackout. This new, cutting-edge 24-megapixel sensor, combined with Sony's most advanced AI-based autofocus system, which performs 120 exposure and autofocus calculations per second, an incredible maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000s, and flash synchronization at all shutter speeds, opens up a whole new world of possibilities. The Sony α9 III features high-density phase-detection autofocus on the focal plane and a dedicated AI processing unit that uses real-time recognition and tracking AF to accurately identify a wide variety of subjects: humans, animals, birds, insects, cars/trains, and airplanes. In the Car/Train category, the camera can now recognize helmets, such as those worn by racing drivers. Animal recognition allows it to identify the eyes of certain ruminants and small animals, as well as the eyes, head, and body of dogs, cats, and other similar animals. Capture handheld shots with confidence. The α9 III incorporates a high-precision image stabilization unit, advanced gyroscopic sensors, and optimized stabilization algorithms to effectively detect and correct camera shake, providing up to 8 stops of stabilization.
The Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens delivers stunning detail and ultra-fast, highly accurate autofocus. Its lightweight design (approximately 1,470 grams) and excellent balance allow you to capture decisive moments, such as fast-paced sports and agile animals, handheld with precision and dynamism. When paired with the α9 III, the Sony 300/2.8 GM enables high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to 120 frames per second. Even subjects with complex and varied movements can be tracked precisely. This lens is an ideal partner for lightweight cameras, reducing your load and fatigue during extended handheld shooting sessions. It is also compatible with optional teleconverters, allowing you to shoot at telephoto focal lengths up to 600mm (900mm equivalent on an APS-C camera).
