Although water covers 71% of the Earth’s surface, only 3% is fresh water, 2.5% of that water is frozen, leaving with only 0.5% fresh water suitable for human consumption.
Globally water demand is increasing sharply. To meet the ever-increasing food demand of growing population, agriculture sector consumes the most water (UN-Water), accounting for 70% of freshwater withdrawal, followed by industrial sector with 20%. The remaining 10% is used for domestic purpose.
According to FAO, approximately 2.3 billion people are currently living in water-stressed countries, with 10 per cent of the global population living in countries facing high or critical water stress.
