Winter in places where the water freezes is not the best time for seaplanes, even amphibious flying boats like Seareys. This is a Searey flying a slalom around the Tar Bay Archipelago in Virginia on such a day, when the water was full of ice floes. The air was dense from cold and pressure and as smooth as air can ever be, making the flying lovely--but flying low was difficult because the water was like a mirror and it was very hard to tell how much air there was between water and airplane. It was not a day for swimming.
