Why the web needs Web Monetization (Part 1 of 3) | What Kind of Internet Do You Want?
Web monetization could fill a giant hole in the content distribution market.
There are essentially two ways to sell content on the web today - ad based or premium. If content is ad based it is free for the user, and the creator is paid by the platform that mines the user data and serves the ad. If content is premium it is sold for $1 or more and can be purchased ala carte, by subscription, pay-per-view, etc. This means there is huge unserved market of content that is worth more than the tiny amount paid for an ad-based view (~1/5 penny) and less than the premium minimum of $1 — And that is where the Web Monetization Standard comes in.
Web monetization can be used with blockchain and other Web 3 protocols but it can also be used with current centralized websites to monetize a web app, it can even be used on Youtube and Twitch. Its a powerful addition for creators to make money online from fiat currencies as well as bitcoin and other cryptocurrency using Interledger payment pointers.
