Trent Klarenbach interviews lifelong friend Shaun Wildman of Flaxcombe, Saskatchewan, discussing rural life, extensive minor hockey travel, and studying Ag Economics at the University of Saskatchewan.
Wildman recounts starting at Rayglen Commodities, learning special crops arbitrage and moving peas and flax into U.S. markets, then working on the Chicago Board of Trade and Winnipeg Commodity Exchange floors during the open-outcry era.
He describes becoming a retail futures broker with Linnco and later joining Xcan/Saskatchewan Wheat Pool’s hedging and trading services, transitioning in 2000 to the cash side as a lentil and pea merchant and then into canola exports.
He covers Wheat Pool’s restructuring under Mayo Schmidt, Viterra’s growth and eventual purchase by Glencore, shifting toward margin-focused trading, and the risks of volatile global markets and defaults.
Wildman closes with his current focus on investments, discretionary futures and stock trading, and pursuing a real estate license to advise on farmland.
