Your passport is the second most important thing to have with you when you are travelling. Your health, of course, being the first.
So when your passport situation is compromised in any way then you feel completely vulnerable to the unknown outcome.
This is exactly what happened to me on my recent visit to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.
My passport was destroyed by water damage, making my photo ineligible.
So here are the steps you must take, as quickly as possible to get
the process of replacing your passport document.
1. Notify the airlines or travel agency as soon as you realize that your passport situation has been compromised in any way. They will be able to help you with the next steps to take, and the consulate office that is closest to your location.
2. Bring someone with you to the consulate who has a valid passport and can verify your identity. Also bring any other documents that have a photo of you, like your drivers license, citizenship card etc.
3. Get two recent passport photos done and bring those with you to the consulate office.
4. Have the currency of your home country to pay for the replacement document, or the currency of the country you are in.

And time, make sure you have plenty of time for the turnaround of getting your replacement passport returned to you. I would say a minimum of 48 hours would be pretty standard.
I trust this never happens to you, but I'm glad I was able to share my experience with you so we can all learn from this process.
Have a safe and stress free trip...
