Part of our ministry to the homeless includes the CleanStart Mobile Hygiene Unit which provides showers and laundry service at several locations around Fremont. This program is run by the City of Fremont and we host it Wednesday and Friday afternoons for three hours each session.
The CleanStart Mobile Hygiene Unit is a 50-foot truck and trailer that is fitted with two full bathrooms and showers, including one that is ADA accessible, and three washer/dryer units. The unit is providing services in coordination with existing food and clothing programs as it rotates to different areas in the city each weekday. Each service site is open for 3 hours. The cost of the Mobile Hygiene unit, funded through Alameda County, was $125,000.
Each three-hour session provides showers for up to 12 people and laundry service for up to 9 people. During the times it is at Niles Discovery Church, we also provide a refreshment table with ice water and fruit and some snacks as well as paper lunch sacks so people can take some food with them.
We also have a table with hygiene kits and other amenities so that those who are unable to take advantage of our services due to over capacity, they won't walk away with nothing.
