The CleanStart Mobile Hygiene was officially launched on Tuesday, September 17, 2019. Mayor Lily Mei and County Supervisor Scott Haggerty spoke proudly of this important project the offers shower and laundry service to the homeless. Project lead was Director Arquimides Caldera, and Rohin Puvvada of Boy Scout Troop 103 who raised over $1,300 money for this project and put together 250 hygiene kits.
The CleanStart Mobile Hygiene Unit is a 50-foot truck and trailer that is fitted with two full bathrooms and showers, including one that is ADA accessible, and three washer/dryer units. The unit is providing services in coordination with existing food and clothing programs as it rotates to different areas in the city each weekday. Each service site is open for 3 to 4 hours. The cost of the Mobile Hygiene unit, funded through Alameda County, was $125,000.
For someone experiencing homelessness, keeping yourself and your clothes clean can be incredibly challenging, and can greatly impact your ability to get and keep a job, or simply participate in society. To meet this need, the City of Fremont, City of Newark, and several community partners developed the Clean Start Mobile Hygiene Program to provide much-needed shower and laundry services to our homeless neighbors.
