Java was originally designed for interactive television, but it was too advanced for the digital cable television industry at the time. The language was initially called Oak after an oak tree that stood outside Gosling's office. Later the project went by the name Green and was finally renamed Java, from Java coffee." Since James Gosling named and promoted Java as visible figure, he could be called its 'father', but the title could rest equally as well on Mike Sheridan or Patrick Naughton. Once Sun Microsystems began leasing some Java and allowing some to be used freely, the development went 'web-wide'. Oracle credits James Gosling, in spite of the team he directed, so probably that name will appear in the history books of the future.
