The Troubles affected Northern Ireland in the period from around 1968/9-1998, pitting the Catholic minority against the Protestant majority with paramilitaries on both sides and the British army nominally there to keep the peace. It wasn't only Northern Ireland that was affected however, and with a Catholic minority in parts of Scotland and growing sectarianism in places like Glasgow, there were fears that the same kind of violence might spread across the North Channel into Scotland.
